To get started with personal training you should follow these quick steps:
Figure out what your goals are before you start. Do you want to loose weight, gain muscles, get more flexible?
Knowing what you want is the first step in making it happen. Many clients start working out with hope of changing everything about their fitness goals. Its not that simple. Usually you cant achieve the perfect balance between cardio, weights and flexibility 3 x week, so unless you have a lot of time that you can devote to fitness, take it one step at a time and take it slow.
Get doctors approval of your activities.
A good personal trainer will ask for doctor's approval to make sure there are no "hidden" aches, forgotten past injuries and other ailments. Doctors recommendations as to the intensity of exercise should also be followed. A good way to measure the intensity is by the percentage of the maximum heart rate. If you are 40 years old, your max heart rate is 220 - 40 = 180. Your doctor might say: John Do can participate in activities ranging from 60 - 80 percent of max heart rate. That means - if you have a heart monitor - you should stay between 108 ( 180 x 0.7 ) and 144 ( 180 x 0.8 ) bits per minute.
Ask as many questions as you need. Dont let the trainer talk on the cell phone as you work out. Make sure trainer shakes your hand when greeting. Do not talk about sex as you work out.
Those are the main rules you should follow. Sticking to them will ensure that professionalism will not be compromised at a cost of having conversations about women, sex, politics and personal matters. Try to keep the conversations strictly to the topic of personal training. Of course you may talk about movies and general issues, but anything controversial will make the training more complicated.
